Stained Glass Windows

The large twelve petal rose window contains the center quarterfoil of the Ecce Agnus Dei, the sacrificial lamb, symbolizing the sacrifice of Our Lord. Surrounding, in the twelve petals are the twelve apostles, the place of Judas being taken by St. Paul.

The circle windows in the transept contain, on the gospel side, a standing figure of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, on the sides. On the epistle side, a standing figure of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the fleur de lis and her monogram on the sides.

There are fourteen windows in the transept and upper nave. The seven windows on the gospel side contain the seven sacraments, depicted by scenes taken from the life of Our Lord.

The first window, nearest the altar, represents the sacrament of Baptism. This is depicted by the baptism of Christ by St. John in the river Jordan.

The second window represents the sacrament of Confirmation. It is depicted by the descent of the Holy Spirit while the Blessed Virgin Mary and the disciples are assembled in the upper room.

The third window represents the sacrament of Holy Eucharist. It is depicted by the Last Supper, which shows Our Lord breaking bread.

The fourth widow represents the sacrament of Penance. It is depicted by Mary Magdalene anointing the feet of Jesus.

The fifth window represents the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. It is depicted by the death of St. Joseph, when Our Lord gave his foster father his last blessing.

The sixth window represents the sacrament of Holy Orders. It is depicted by Christ ordaining the disciples by laying on of His hands shortly after the Last Supper.

The seventh window represents the sacrament of Matrimony. It is depicted by the wedding in Cana. Our Lord is shown establishing this sacrament by blessing the wedding couple while His mother is looking on. The miracle of changing water into wine is represented by the steward in the foreground.

The seven windows on the epistle side contain the seven joys of the Blessed Mother.

The first window, the Annunciation, shows the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, holding a staff with a ribbon containing the inscription “Gratia Plena.”

The second window, the Visitation, shows the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph arriving at the house of Elizabeth and Zacharias.

The third window, the Nativity, shows the Blessed Mother holding the child on her lap, while the shepherds come from the fields. Saint Joseph is in the background.

The fourth window, the Adoration of the Magi, shows the three wise men bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh. The star that led them to the Holy Family is shown above.

The fifth window, the Finding in the Temple, shows Our Lord teaching among the doctors. The Blessed Mother found her son after looking for Him for three days.

The sixth window, the Assumption, depicts joy when the Blessed Mother was taken bodily into heaven.

The seventh window, the Coronation, shows the Holy Trinity receiving the Blessed Virgin Mary and crowning her as Queen of Heaven.

The Sanctuary contains eight windows, four on each side. The windows on the epistle side depict the four evangelists. From left to right they are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The windows on the gospel side depict four of the Latin Doctors of the Church – St. Augustine, St. Ambrose, St. Gregory and St. Jerome.
